Breakfast Symposiums

We are pleased to offer two exclusive Breakfast Symposiums being held on Thursday, 14 and Friday, 15 May. Each session will feature engaging discussion, valuable insights, and the opportunity to connect with fellow attendees.

Kindly indicate below whether you will be attending.  Spaces are limited, so early registration is strongly encouraged to avoid disappointment.

We extend our sincere thanks to our amazing sponsors BrightSky Australia and Coloplast.

Day 1: Breakfast Symposium Sponsored by BrightSky Australia

Multifactorial perspectives on continence care

This presentation examines the biopsychosocial dimensions of incontinence and explores how clinicians can integrate this framework into effective, person-centred continence care. Recognising that incontinence is rarely solely a physical concern, the session highlights the complex interplay between biological factors, psychological experiences, and social or environmental influences that shape an individual’s continence status and overall wellbeing.

While continence management is often approached primarily from a medical perspective, outcomes are significantly influenced by factors such as comorbid health conditions, emotional responses, stigma, coping strategies, functional capacity, and social context. Adopting a biopsychosocial lens enables clinicians to move beyond symptom management toward more holistic, compassionate, and sustainable care.

The presentation will outline practical strategies for incorporating this broader understanding into everyday clinical practice. Key areas include enhancing assessment processes, asking sensitive and meaningful questions, identifying psychosocial impacts, and tailoring management plans to align with individual goals, preferences, and circumstances, including aspects like intimacy.

Attention will also be given to promoting dignity, reducing stigma, and fostering open, respectful conversations about continence. By exploring multifactorial perspectives on continence care and emphasising the importance of viewing the whole person, this session aims to support clinicians in delivering comprehensive, person-centred management that improves both clinical outcomes and quality of life.

Workshop 3: Sexuality in pelvic health care: Clinical skills and conversations that matter

Sexual wellbeing is deeply connected to pelvic health, yet many practitioners feel uncertain about how to address it sensitively and within scope. This workshop equips pelvic health and continence practitioners with the confidence, language and clinical frameworks needed to initiate conversations about sexuality and support patients in a safe, trauma-informed and practical way. Participants will learn the key links between pelvic health conditions and sexual function, including the impacts of pain, incontinence, avoidance, anxiety and relational stress.

The session includes simple clinical scripts for initiating sexual-health discussions, guidance on avoiding unintentional shame and strategies for identifying when concerns require referral to psychosexual therapy or mental health support. Using a biopsychosocial lens and case examples drawn from clinical practice, this workshop offers actionable tools that clinicians can use immediately.

The program supports practitioners in delivering compassionate, integrated pelvic health care while strengthening patient engagement, trust and treatment adherence.

Workshop 5: The clinical application of posterior tibial nerve stimulation for Ui and FI

Posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) is a useful treatment option for specific patients who experience urinary and faecal incontinence. This workshop is designed for registered nurses who would like to offer this treatment option within their service. We will begin by discussing the patients who may be the best candidates for this type of treatment and the different regimes that have shown to be efficacious for these patients. After this discussion we will break into small groups and continue with hands on training in applying both percutaneous and transcutaneous stimulation with a skilled facilitator to guide.

Following the hands on training we will regroup and close the session with Q&A, trouble shooting and case scenarios. This workshop will provide an excellent platform to learn about PTNS in a supportive environment. It will equip nurses with useful knowledge that can be utilised when returning to their clinical service.

Through an interactive and evidence-based format, participants will gain insights into both subjective and objective assessment techniques and explore rehabilitative interventions that can be integrated into clinical practice.

Target Audience Health professionals involved in continence care, including physiotherapists, nurses, occupational therapists, and clinicians seeking to enhance their assessment and management skills.

Workshop 7: Paediatric assesment and intervention. Presented by SPUNZA

ICCS guidelines and publications provide detailed information about the assessment and management of children with bladder and bowel dysfunction. Reference to urodynamic parameters can be confusing to clinicians who are unfamiliar. “Urodynamics” encompasses a broad spectrum of clinical information.

In this workshop we will contextualise relevant urodynamic data points with symptoms and interventions. We will identify clinical factors that indicate complexity and suggest need for more advanced assessment.

Workshop 8: The Continence Health Australia research consortium launch

This workshop is for any clinician or consumer actively conducting research, or interested in participating in research, to meet and collaborate. We will hear about the journey to leading a research team from Prof Brubaker, Prof Moore and Prof Frawley. We will share the findings from a researcher needs analysis undertaken by CHA and discuss meaningful consumer engagement in our continence studies and what a national research agenda might look like. Finally, you will make history by being part of the launch of the new CHA Research consortium. There will be plenty of time for discussion and no issue is off the table.
